Steven Clapham is the author of The Smart Money Method: How to Pick Stocks like a Hedge Fund Pro.

He has generously given his time to be interviewed by us at Financial-Expert.co.uk. You can read his answers just below.

This is the third article in what I hope will be a long-running series of articles with British and international investing book authors.

By prompting us to read more, and read more widely, I believe we’ll all be able to refine and improve our investment strategy and discipline and generate higher returns as a result. Who could argue with that logic?

Interview with author Steve Clapham

Please could you tell us a little about your professional background and why you felt inspired to write the book?

Steve: I have 30 years of experience as a sell-side analyst, and as a hedge fund partner and head of research. I now run a training business so it felt a natural extension to write a book which would help investors.

This title is a guide for beginners. What drove you to write a starter guide compared to a more specialist title?

Steve: This is intended as a guide for anyone interested in equities., It will be of limited value to a complete novice and to a hedge fund manager but even they should get something from it, but it’s got loads of useful help for anyone in between; if your investing level is that of an intermediate skier, this is the idea book.

In the course of researching and writing your books – did you come across anything that surprised you?

Steve: I have only written one book and it’s based on my research process and methodology so there were no surprises but the stockmarket never ceases to amaze and surprise me – something new every day!

For budding financial writers, what is the one piece of advice would you give to those writing to educate beginners about investments?

Get on Twitter first.

And finally, I like to ask all authors; when saving and investing your own money, what is your preferred investing style?

Steve: I have an approach very similar to the book. I do some special situations, but I mainly own quality stocks for the long term, supplemented by basket exposure to particular themes.

I try to have a hands-off approach otherwise it would be an all-consuming full-time job.
