List of Oil ETFs (Exchange Traded Funds)

Oil is perhaps the most politically important commodity in the world. Its price influences the growth of whole economies, and wars have been fought in the name of securing supplies. With the worries about Peak Oil increasing tensions in the energy industry, many speculators are beginning to place long term bets on an increase of the price of oil. One way that investors are gaining exposure to the various oil prices, is through oil ETFs and ETCs. These are exchange traded funds (or certificates) that trade in oil futures or similar derivatives. An investor can purchase shares in an ETF in the same way they can buy shares of a company. ETFs are available to buy and sell throughout the day during trading hours, providing ample liquidity provided the fund is large enough.

Below I have compiled a list of known oil ETFs to aid your research into commodity exposure and investment. We don’t necessarily recommend or promote the use of these products, please read our disclaimer.

You’ll notice that out of all the commodities that are featured on How to Invest In Commodities, oil has by far the great variety of ETFs. This is due to the fact that oil is traded as several different types (E.g. Brent Crude, WTI Crude, Heating Oil). Also, unlike precious metals, oil tends to trend for shorter period of time. This increases the relevancy of ‘bearish’ or ‘short’ ETFs that allow you to profit if oil falls in value. The different ETFs above may track different indexes, invest in different futures and some will be more effective at tracking the spot price of oil closely.
